

The second and perhaps more important causal factor was Napoleon’s destruction which I would call the imperial deterrent. The first was an accumulation of internal grievances both on the part of the elites, and on the part of non-elites in Latin-American societies there were quite different grievances and complaints, but they were nonetheless destabilizing.

There are two sets of factors that were quite important.
